Your Google Business Profile Is Worth More Than Your Website

Here's an uncomfortable truth for Springfield shop owners: when somebody near you searches "plumber near me" or "best tacos Springfield MO," they almost never click through to anybody's website first. They look at the map pack — those three business listings with stars, hours, and photos sitting right at the top of Google. That listing is your Google Business Profile, and it's free.

We run local SEO for 417-area businesses, and the profile is the first thing we fix, because it's the highest-leverage free asset a local business owns. Here's how to make yours pull its weight.

1. Claim it and fill in everything

Search your business name on Google. If a profile exists and you haven't claimed it, claim it today. Then fill in every field: exact hours (including holiday hours), services, service areas, business description, and attributes like "women-owned" or "wheelchair accessible" where they apply. Empty fields are rankings you're leaving on the table.

2. Pick the right primary category

This is the single most common mistake we see. "General contractor" versus "kitchen remodeler" can be the difference between showing up and being invisible. Your primary category should match what your best customers actually type into Google — not the fanciest description of what you do.

3. Photos beat paragraphs

Businesses with photos get dramatically more calls and direction requests than businesses without them. Upload real photos: your storefront, your crew at work, finished jobs, the inside of the shop. Skip the stock photos — customers can smell them, and so can Google.

4. Reviews are a ranking factor, not just a reputation factor

Google has said it outright: review count, rating, and how you respond all feed local rankings. Ask every happy customer — a simple QR code at the counter does the job. And respond to every review, good and bad, like a human being. That's exactly what our Review Booster service systematizes for busy owners.

5. Post on it like it's social media

Most owners don't know the profile has its own posting feature. Weekly posts — a special, a finished project, a seasonal reminder — keep the listing fresh and give Google new signals that your business is alive. It takes five minutes.

The bottom line

Your website matters — it's where serious buyers go to check you out. But your Google Business Profile is the bouncer at the door: it decides who even walks in. Get the profile right first, and every other marketing dollar you spend works harder.
